Who is she and when was she last seen? Suzy Lamplugh was a 25-year-old estate agent working in Fulham, west London. German nurse admits killing 100 patients

Image
A German nurse has admitted killing 100 patients in his care on the opening day of his trial. Niels Hoegel was accused of intentionally administering medical overdoses to victims so he could bring them back to life at the last moment and appear heroic. As the proceedings opened in the northern city of Oldenburg, presiding judge Sebastian Buehrmann asked whether the charges against him were accurate, to which Hoegel replied "yes". "What I have admitted took place," he told the courtroom, which was full of grieving relatives of victims. Hoegel appears to have followed a similar procedure each time, first injecting a medication that triggered cardiac arrest, and then stepping in to resuscitate them. Prosecutors say he was motivated by vanity, to show off his skills at saving human lives, and by simple "boredom". The choice of victim appears to have been entirely random, with their ages ranging from 34 to 96. Killing in itself was nev...

Parker Solar Probe now closest ever spacecraft to the sun

Image
Over the next seven years it will make 24 close approaches, ultimately coming within just 3.8 million miles of the solar surface. NASA has confirmed that its Parker Solar Probe is now closer to the sun than any spacecraft has ever been. It has beaten the record of 26.6 million miles set by Helios-2 in 1976. The probe will keep getting closer to the sun until it flies through the corona, or outer atmosphere, for the first time next week, passing within 15 million miles of the solar surface. Over the next seven years it will make 24 close approaches to the sun, ultimately coming within just 3.8 million miles of the surface. The Parker Solar Probe is the first NASA spacecraft to be named after someone still alive. Eugene Parker, a 91-year-old astrophysicist, proposed the existence of solar wind - a steady, supersonic stream of particles blasting off the sun. He was at the launch of the probe in August. The mission to get this close to the sun has been on NASA's b...

Budget 2018: Hard work has paid off, chancellor insists

Image
Philip Hammond has declared the era of austerity is "finally coming to an end" as he delivered the biggest giveaway budget since 2010. The chancellor, unveiling his last budget before Brexit, told the House of Commons the UK would see "resilient" growth in the years to come as he revealed upgraded growth forecasts from next year. Mr Hammond told MPs his plans will help "the strivers, the grafters and the carers" and would pave the way for a "brighter future". He claimed the "hard work" of the British people over the decade since the financial crisis is "paying off". However, Labour attacked the chancellor's "half measures and quick fixes" and stressed "austerity grinds on".
